Several large-scale neutrino detectors, based either on the Liquid Argon technology (DUNE) or the water-Cherenkov approach (KM3NeT, HyperKamiokande, IceCube Upgrade,...) are currently under construction and on the verge of providing unprecedented statistics and sensitivity for neutrinos created in the interactions of cosmic rays with the Earth’s atmosphere.

Neutrino oscillations in the high frequency regime

Neutrino oscillation computations are one of the bottlenecks in performing data analyses of atmospheric neutrinos. The high frequency regimes at lower energies are particularly challenging as the fast oscillations need to be averaged to account for the limited resolution of the detector.

In this internship, the student will learn how to use the OscProb package and will implement a new solution for efficiently averaging oscillations in the high frequency regime.

Confronting the primary systematic uncertainties towards the DUNE precision era of neutrino oscillation measurements

The next generation of accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments, DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande, have the potential to revolutionise our understanding of fundamental physics, offering opportunities to: characterise charge-parity (CP) violation in the lepton section (potentially linked to the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe); determine the neutrino mass ordering; and to search for physics even further beyond the standard model.
