High Energy Astrophysics

Researchers from the high energy astrophysics group of the APC laboratory study the high energy phenomena at play in the Universe: accretion and ejection of matter on stellar and super massive black holes, particle acceleration mechanisms and their limits around compact objects and supernova remnants, origin and mechanism of gamma-ray bursts, nature of the ultra high energy cosmic ray particles as well as their origin and acceleration sites.

To tackle these issues, the high energy astrophysics group is deeply involved in the development and operation of high energy experiments that observe or will observe in the near future the Universe using different messengers: photons (X-rays: ATHENA, soft gamma-rays: INTEGRAL and SVOM, very high energy gamma rays: H.E.S.S./CTA), cosmic rays (JEM-EUSO), and neutrinos (ANTARES/KM3NET). All these activities are complemented by theoretical and phenomenological studies.

The group is also involved in an educational project, IGOSat, a nanosatellite entirely built by university students.
