LIGO/VIRGO collaboration has announced 4 confirmed detection of gravitational wave (GW) signals
from the merging binary black holes. This opens a new window in the astronomy: gravitational wave astrophysics.
There are three major efforts to search for GWs: LIGO-VIRGO detectors operating in the frequency range
between few Hz and kHz, LISA - space based detector which will be launched in 2034 and is sensitive
in the milli-Hertz band, PTA (Pulsar Timing Array) - uses the monitoring of millisecond (stable) pulsars
to detect GWs in the nano-Hertz band.
The prime aim of this project is to accumulate high quality PTA data and to design the detection algorithm/strategy which warrants the detection of low frequency GW with PTA. Due to similarity of GW signal coming from the astrophysical population of compact binaries, the detection/method strategy will be shared with the LISA data analysis. This is a joint project with the group at Nançay Radio Telescope (NRT) which is also involved in the MeerKAT project (South Africa). The PhD student is expected to participate in the reduction of the data obtained with NRT and MeerKAT and in the search for GW signals from the population of massive black hole binaries. This implies that the candidate will be a member of European Pulsar Timing collaboration as well as a member of LISA consortium.
The data analysis part of this project is to develop the detection method which deals with detecting and characterizing
the population of binary systems in low frequency bands (nano-Hz for PTA and milli-Hz for LISA). This includes detecting the unresolved stochastic signal and a number of individually resolvable signals.
