The astrophysics of black hole binaries in the era of gravitational wave astronomy

Black holes (BHs) cover a wide range of mass: from the stellar BH binaries detected with LIGO/Virgo to the massive BHs residing at the center of galaxies. Both these populations will be detectable in future by LISA at low-frequency. In this talk I will provide an overview of my past and current research activity: for stellar BH binaries I will discuss about the necessary waveform accuracy to track their signals during the long inspiral in LISA in the post-Newtonian formalism and I will explore the possibility to form BH binaries above the pair-instability mass gap: if such a population exist, it can be easily detected with LISA and it might constitute an additional source of stochastic background. Finally I will present the results for the parameter estimation of massive BH binaries in LISA relevant for the search of possible electromagnetic counterparts.
