Neutrinos: from the discovery of the diffuse supernova background to entanglement

Neutrinos are elementary massive particles with mixings. They can change flavor while propagating. Weakly interacting, neutrinos tell us about the primordial Universe and dense environments, such as exploding stars (core-collapse supernovae) or binary compact objects (neutron star-neutron star, black hole-neutron star). Such neutrinos undergo unexpected flavor phenomena and can be unique probes for new physics.

Post-doctoral position in theoretical high-energy physics, gravity and string theory

The APC theory group will have a postdoctoral opening  for a position  starting in the fall 2025,  to participate in ongoing research projects in the context of the gauge/gravity duality and its applications to QCD and neutron stars.

Applicants should have a PhD in theoretical physics and  some knowledge or experience on the gauge/gravity duality and QCD. Successful applicants will be expected to start their appointment in September 2025.

Pilar Iváñez-Ballesteros (PhD student) and Maria Cristina Volpe (APC Theory group) have published an article in the review Physics Letters B presenting the very first likelihood analysis of the 24 neutrino events from the SN1987A including the possibility that neutrinos can decay non-radiatively.

Neutron star physics, neutron star mergers, near-extremal black holes and effective theories near absolute zero.

This project involves using techniques from the AdS/CFT correspondence (known also as holography) to understand

(a) The non-trivial phases in the QCD phase diagram, involving non zero baryon number density as well as non-zero isospin density.

(b) The statics and dynamics in non-trivial phases relevant for neutron stars, where very low temperatures are relevant.
