POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
Development of cryogenic detectors
Position location: APC, 10, rue A. Domon & Léonie Duquet - 75013 Paris - France
Contract: Researcher CDD (Contrat à Durée Déterminée)
Initial contract duration: 12 months (renewable 1 more year)
Starting date: as soon as possible
Salary: depending on experience
APC is a leading laboratory in France in the field of AstroParticules and Cosmology. It is contributing to several major space missions (Planck, Euclid, Athena, ELISA) as well as balloon and ground-based projects (QUBIC, EUSO-SPB, Ad VIRGO to cite a few).
The Millimeter laboratory within the Cosmology group is dedicated to the development of novel cryogenic detectors for Astronomy. This team has successfully developed the QUBIC TES readout system with an unprecedented multiplexing factor of 128. It has many international collaborations and is working closely with CNES and ESA.
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the team working on Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) for Astronomy. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the laboratory activities but the main responsibility will be the development of an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator test bench for NIR-VIS KIDs characterisation at 100mK or below. This work will be in collaboration with the Observatoire de Paris - GEPI. It will include the definition of fast readout electronics suitable for photon counting, the choice of light sources suitable for this task, the definition of the optics for signal injection and the full characterization of the detectors in terms of sensitivity. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in pixel design, prototype camera definition and device fabrication in the micro-fabrication facilities at the Observatoire de Paris and at C2N in Orsay.
The candidate will also have the opportunity to work on KIDs for Millimetre Wave bands, where prototypes are already available and operate on a dedicated test bench at 300mK, based on a closed-cycle 3He-4He refrigerator. In this wavelength range, we are working in close collaboration with the Néel Institut and LPSC in Grenoble, as well as with Centro Atómico Bariloche and CNEA-Buenos Aires in Argentina.
Experience in any of the following fields is highly desirable: CMB instrumentation, high frequency electronics, cryogenics, nanotechnologies and/or solid-state physics. The successful applicant will spend most of her/his time working at APC, Paris with significant collaborations with other teams involved in the work (mostly in France and Argentina).
Applicants are expected to provide a Curriculum Vitae, a cover letter and at least one letter of recommendation. Please direct applications to Dr Michel Piat (piatapc.univ-paris7.fr), head of the APC millimetre laboratory and Dr Andrea Tartari (tartariapc.univ-paris7.fr), coordinator of the KIDs development. Priority will be given to applications received by July 1st, 2017 but they will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.
