The landscape of gravitational waves astrophysics after the third LIGO-Virgo observational run

Abstract:  The LIGO and Virgo collaborations released the latest results and
datasets corresponding the third observational run in Autumn 2021
with the GWTC2.1 and GWTC-3 catalogs. Thanks to the instrumental
upgrades that occurred the year before, the sensitivity of the
interferometers has considerably increased, leading to 79 new
detections of gravitational-waves events to add to the 11
detections of GWTC-1 (comprising the first and second
observational runs). All the sources are coalescing binary
systems of black holes and/or neutron stars, with masses
between 1.2 and 107 solar Masses and a maximal luminosity
distance of 8 Gpc. The analysis of the individual and population
properties of those events enables to infer formation scenarii,
and the absence of mass gaps observed in the electromagnetic
sector hints toward possible dynamical channels. By associating
gravitational waves signals to galaxy catalogs,
cosmological parameters can be inferred with multimessenger
informations. The theory of general relativity is tested by
probing the existence of deviations due to gravitational waves
   generation, propagation, and extra polarisations.
