the three codes are distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) as published by the Free Software Foundation. they can be executed with GNU Octave. I have used version 2.1.35 distributed with GNU Debian 3.0. versions of errorbar.m and related functions later than 1.3 (revision number on octave CVS) are however required to make Fig. 1 correctly. recent versions of octave (>=2.1.40) include a functioning version of errorbar.m
